Freedom Autosport Drivers Stay Busy Before Austin

The team readies for a track that suits the Mazda MX-5s well

AUSTIN, Texas—Circuit of the Americas might be the first IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race in over a month, but the Freedom Autosport drivers have been keeping busy with everything from fatherhood to finals.

Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer will be climbing back behind the wheel of the No. 25 ModSpace/Spartan Cargo Trailers Mazda MX-5, but two weekends ago, they were busy as the co-owners of ModSpace Racing. The team won both rounds of the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup season opener at Barber Motorsports Park.

McCumbee and his wife Stephie welcomed their first child on Tuesday, April 25. Freedom Autosport extends its congratulations to them and their son Cannon Chad McCumbee.

Andrew Carbonell, who co-drives the No. 26 Freedom Autosport/Semper Fi Fund Mazda MX-5 with Liam Dwyer, was at Barber, as well. Carbonell acts as both a driver coach and driver steward for the MX-5 Cup Series. Dwyer, meanwhile, recently visited Walter Reed Medical Center, which included a chat with the President of the United States.

If Britt Casey, Jr., and Robby Foley look a little bleary-eyed when they arrive at Circuit of the Americas, that is because it is not just race week for the two college students: it is also finals week. Casey has five finals to take, and Foley has three. The two are co-driving the No. 27 TRUMPF Mazda MX-5.

The two-hour Continental Tire Series race at Circuit of the Americas gets started at 3:45 p.m. ET on Friday, May 5. Fans can tune in live at IMSA.tv or via the IMSA app.

Chad McCumbee:
I think Circuit of the Americas has a little bit of everything to offer, and the versatility of our Mazda MX-5 plays into that. For me personally it was the track where I got my first pole in the series. It’s one of my favorite tracks and I always look forward to going there. The state of Texas has always been successful for me, even in my circle track career, so hopefully that continues.

Stevan McAleer:
Circuit of the Americas is a big track, and there’s lots of open space. It has so much technical stuff that it really suits the Mazda MX-5. One lap around there is a busy time! We’ve always been dominant at COTA, and I’d expect to be that way again. We can’t afford another bad race, and Chad and I have to look after the equipment the best we can until those final laps.

William Mann, Vice President of Business Development for ModSpace:
ModSpace is really looking forward to Chad and Stevan competing at COTA this weekend. They are coming off a successful weekend at Barber Motorsports Park as team owners in the MX-5 Cup Series, and I know they are excited to get back in the driver’s seat. COTA is a demanding racetrack, but Chad and Stevan have what it takes to bring home a victory.

Andrew Carbonell:
First and foremost, Circuit of the Americas is an exciting track to go to. It’s the Formula One track for North America, and the track was developed to those standards, so it’s exciting for anyone to race on. That also makes it a good track for the Mazda MX-5 because it has a lot of different types of corners and heavy brake zones.

Liam Dwyer:
Circuit of the Americas is a really good track for the Mazdas because you’ve got two heavy braking zones after fast straights, a lot of slow corners with multiple transitions, and quick acceleration zones where the Mazda does well since it’s lightweight. I think it’s cool we go to the one and only F1 track in the U.S., a place where guys like Lewis Hamilton and Valentino Rossi have raced.

Britt Casey, Jr.:
Circuit of the Americas is very technical. That being said, it’s all about slowing your mind down. I’ve found it beneficial to be more calculated there, and that’s a track where you’re not going after it every lap. That track rewards smooth hands and deliberate inputs. It’s a unique place.

Robby Foley:
It’s cool to be able to race on an F1 track and share the same garages and pit lane as them. I like Circuit of the Americas. It’s very technical and you get everything: fast and flowing, and slower, tighter corners. Overall the track has good flow and there’s enough elevation change to keep it interesting. Our Mazda MX-5 will be good in the twisty bits.
